The FUNction and Flow of fascia 

     With over 1000 times more nerve endings than the brain and gut, comprising at least 20% of our body, and encompassing 90% of our lymph nodes, it is a viscous, biophotonic, bioresinant, hydraulic, fluid, netting system known as our largest kinesthetic sensory organ. It encases and encompasses our body wrapping in and around our organs, muscles, ligaments, nerves, blood vessels, bone, and meningeal tissues. It communicates with our brain biochemically, biophotonically, and bioresinantly via hydraulic fluid-filled tubing and creates the biomechanics that signal hormones, propel and power our movement, respond to stimuli, and enable us to create  movement patterns and store experiences. This intersticium, this three-dimensional, layered fascia forms and holds our bodies together.  It compresses and releases as influenced by pressure, gravity, movement, and by external and internal influences. It is essentially our "subconscious" command center while our brain is our "conscious" super-computer.

     No longer medically thought of as simply “packing material”, our fascia (or interstitium) relays a sense of wellness and health within our being. The viscous, fluid-filled, hydraulic structures of the interstitium, and its kinesthetic response to proprioception and interception stimuli is sent to our brain as fast as the speed of "thought", and more immediate than nerve signals via the spinal cord. This emotion/thought/reaction is interconnected and therefore effecting which biochemicals are released at what time, rate, and speed. This in turn effects your response to stimuli because we are tensegrity structures. Easing restriction and allowing increased movement within the fascia allows for greater wellbeing and improved function in multiple dimensions and within layers. This kinesthetic function of our fascia has the power to contribute to our wellbeing.

     No longer viewed as impliable and inert, it is realized that fascia is our stabilizing adaptive response to load, pressure, and stress. Compensations from these adaptations can result in density of the viscosity and flexibility of the fascial layers, which in turn causes muscle restriction and joint compression. Proteins called glycosaminoglycans, or GAGs for short, are a crucial part of the functioning of the fascial system. However, the connective properties of GAGs compress and stick layers together when fluid is not present and new compensational patterns are therefore developed. This happens from improper sustained posture, repetitive movement in the same plane, dehydration, and also by our reactions and response patterns which reflect our proprioception and interoception. This hardening and stiffening of the layers of fascia, which are typically pliable and boyant, diminishes the range of motion. When there is trauma and/or dehydration, whether physical/ emotional or perceived/real, it triggers biochemical stress hormones which also get detained in viscous, stuck fascia.  This is also how our body stores emotions and memories. There are multiple layers of fascia in which trauma and/or dehydration can cause fascia to compress or get stuck, so it is crucial to regularly evaluate and calibrate our hydration and movement patterns in order to keep our fascia fluid and free of restriction.

     When we are free of tightness and pains from constricted layers within our intersticial space, we are more able to coordinate and communicate within the whole body, become more resilient to stressors, and move in ease instead of “dis-ease”. Our bodies are better able to function as intended utilizing energy and hormones, and better able to withstand outside factors such as toxins, environmental stimuli, and emotional stimuli. This facilitates a greater sense of wellbeing and a healthier physical and emotional response versus reaction to daily external and internal stressors. When finely tuned, our mechanoreceptors are better able to influence and communicate, therefore triggering proper and appropriate release of hormones such as blood sugar, stress hormones, sex hormones, our natural anti-inflammation properties, and feel-good brain chemicals.  All of these, individually and together, can affect the patterns, rate, and quality of movement. If given the chance for proper mobility, our muscles can also stretch up to three times their length, increasing the body’s potential and range of motion, enabling proper fluid flow within the body, granting greater circulation, and increasing lymph function. 

     It is crucial to hydrate with proper minerals and silica because our facia receives water via microvenules.  However, when the layers are constantly compressed or strained, the microvenules also get compressed, decreasing the viscosity of fluid among the layers. This is why it is important to regularly release and open up the tight and stuck tissues in order to open the mirovenules and restore hydration to the flow of the fascia. The older the injury or longer the improper posture, and the longer and harder the tissue is put under compression and strain, the more regularly you will need release movements for proper facial flow and function. Regular movement, stretching, and rest will also help counteract the effects of improper sustained posture or repetitive movements and allow for proper calibrations and hydration.
